'Heathers' live lounge event, 5/06/2018; a review.

I was very privileged to see a cheeky little preview of what is set to be an 8-week treat for the West End, starting this Saturday 9th... 'Heathers'!

Greetings, salutations. Welcome to Westerberg High, where Veronica Sawyer is just another of the nobodies dreaming of a better day. But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of the three beautiful and impossibly cruel Heathers, her dreams of popularity finally start to come true. Until JD turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it’s murder being a somebody…

Wickedly funny and with dazzling book, music and lyrics by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe, 'Heathers' is based on the 1988 cult hit that starred Winona Ryder and Christian Slater, and was produced by Bill Kenwright and Paul Taylor-Mills, the team behind the acclaimed stage adaptation of Carrie. With direction from Andy Fickman and electrifying choreography by Gary Lloyd, this is one class production you can’t afford to skip.

This little 'live lounge'-style preview was the first time the cast performed to the public, and when I spoke briefly to Carrie Hope Fletcher beforehand she expressed that they were more keen to finally show what they've been working on, and get people excited, than they were nervous.

First, we heard from the Andy Fickman about his experience working on the show, and how excited and honoured he felt to be working on this particular production. It was also his job to give us some context before each musical number, which he did brilliantly - giving us just enough info, no spoilers, and immediately exciting us about the plot and making us eager to see the full show. He was cheered and applauded throughout his speeches between songs by the assembled press, bloggers – and his cast.

The Heathers were first up, of course. Jodie Steele (Chandler), Sophie Isaacs (McNamara) and T'Shan Williams (Duke) killed it with their perfectly sassy and brilliantly bitchy performance.

Next up was Carrie Hope Fletcher and Jamie Muscato, a.k.a Veronica and JD. They sang 'Seventeen' together, and the many videos of this particular preview performance have been popping up all over the Twittersphere for the past couple of days, inducing infinite chills online - as it also did IRL.

It's really special watching new cast mates perform together for an audience; seeing the bond that's formed through recent rehearsals and really getting a sense of chemistry as well as trust and friendship. It felt very special seeing these two in particular, and then when the whole cast came on to sing and dance together afterwards, it was truly magical.

Safe to say Rebecca Lock – Ms Fleming – smashed this final number. The feeling of excitement and joy in the cast surrounding and singing with her was intense and infectious, too.

Based on this preview alone, I am so confident this show will become one of my favourites. That is, if I get in there quick enough to see it - it's only on for 8 weeks at The Other Palace, and the tickets are going FAST! Get on it, people!
