Eating and drinking for less than 48 hours in Leeds.
Leeds might not be the first place you think of for a decent vegan cuisine experience, but as Hugh Grant's character in a ridiculously fluffy flop of a rom-com once sang (poorly), 'don't write me off just yet'.
I was there for two days, so barely any time to truly indulge and properly get to know the city itself, let alone the restaurants and cafes, but I did my very best to explore and sample where and what I could. I went to a few places and thought hey, I haven't blogged much recently, this could totally be a post I awkwardly throw together while I'm waiting for my elusive creative spirit to return!!
200 Degrees Coffee Shop & Barista School
31 Bond St, Leeds LS1 5BQ
If you're ever feeling uninspired and soggy on a dull but busy street, wondering where to go and spend some time sitting on an old-fashioned chair by an old fireplace writing a congratulations card for a colleague with a deliciously bitter black coffee cooling on an end table beside you - go to the nearest barista school. You won't be disappointed, with the beverages or the service. A++.
'Located in the heart of Leeds on Bond Street, our coffee shop is ideal for both office workers and shoppers. Part of the thriving food and drink scene in the city, the coffee shop includes a dedicated barista school and private meeting room for up to 16 people. Our Meeting Room & Barista School is a unique space in the stimulating environment of one of the city's most popular coffee shops. We're a refreshing change from the bland corporate rooms, combining cool mid-century architecture with contemporary meeting facilities, and our reputation for high quality food and coffee.' - read more of this place's lovely tale on their website!

*I really enjoy that this place's website says no hen dos/stags, and that football colours will be admitted 'at the manager's discretion'. Priorities, people!
This place is a groovy self-proclaimed cultural hub in Leeds that puts on a mix of live music, arts, and delicious food. Located in what is apparently a historic three-storey building, Belgrave Music Hall boasts a lively rooftop terrace, two indoor bars, and a gig space. It's well-known for the welcoming, community-driven atmosphere, and my research tells me it's a favoured spot for Leeds locals to enjoy everything from indie bands to DJ sets... I didn't go there for any of the above, though. I went for a quick bev and bite, while I decided where to go for a proper meal.
Belgrave's foodie offerings are pop-ups, specifically award-winning pizzas and burgers. I was delighted to realise after I walked in the door that I had half an hour before Dough Boys' early evening half-price offer expired, and I queued up for the last two vegan slices - one of them was then offered to me for free, as it was slightly scorched. Fortunately, I enjoy burnt edges.
Also, 10/10 seating options right at the front of the place; I lounged on the L-shaped sofa as I scrolled through social media and let the pizza pieces digest, and very nearly dozed off.
Now, onwards!

'When you step inside a Zaap restaurant you will feel like you have been transported into a Bangkok street food market, with all its magical hustle and bustle, neon lighting, funky tuk tuks and, of course the most amazing Thai street food you will ever taste! With over 80 of the most authentic Thai street food dishes on the menu, your taste buds will rock to the Bangkok vibe and you’ll feel like you are in the street food capital of the world, Thailand.'
- the website may seem bold in its claims, but I tell you what, it's pretty glorious in this place. I had edamame, a fruity cocktail, and a huge bowl of hot, thick noodles and veg-tastic broth. The team serving were all super friendly, accommodating and flexible with my vegan requirements. I will definitely consider returning next time I'm travelling with work.
FYI, they are a walk-in restaurant only. Very convenient for me in my overnight 'flitting about' kind of state - maybe worth considering if you're planning a bigger event.

Let's have the spiel, then... 'Known for its speakeasy vibe and prohibition-era decor, Blind Tyger offers a unique atmosphere where dim lighting, vintage furnishings, and exposed brick walls transport guests to a bygone era. The bar’s carefully crafted cocktail menu showcases inventive drinks made with premium spirits, homemade infusions, and seasonal ingredients. With a focus on quality and creativity, Blind Tyger’s bartenders are skilled mixologists who tailor each drink for a memorable experience. It's a humble hidden gem for cocktail enthusiasts looking for a stylish night out in Leeds.'
I have to call it what it is. Blind Tyger is eclectic and intimate with obscene hipster boujie energy - conveniently located just above the aforementioned Belgrave Music Hall. I was unexpectedly taken there by a local friend after my delightful dinner at Zaap; I worried I'd be too full and sluggish to indulge in any more delicious things, but I was very happily proven wrong. Also, I learned upon arrival that it was Negroni week?! Rude not to. They were out of their tonka and beet blend, which wasn't a complete disaster as I hate beets, so I (we) had their special Sandinista, and the homemade grapefruit Campari blend was lovely. It gave the kisses a good citrusy kick.
Well, I hope this gave you a nice little taste of what central Leeds has to offer for us vegans/coffee and cocktail lovers. I enjoyed writing it but crikey, I'm out of practice... it took me a while longer than it would have a year or so ago. Bear with, she says, for the hundredth time. I'm getting back into this.
